Lessons

I am very methodic about my banjo playing, and transfer that to my teaching. I use traditional bluegrass repertoire to build strong foundations in right hand technique and tone production, focusing primarily on the work of Earl Scruggs and JD Crowe. Students will learn the music theory necessary to understand how songs and melodies are put together, as well as delve into modern techniques and players. I also push my students get involved with the bluegrass community in Boston, finding jams that suit their skill level.

For your lesson, you’ll need a 5-string banjo and finger picks. Please bring any material you’ve been working on as well.

Lessons are $60.00/hr and taught out of my apartment in Somerville on weekday evenings and weekends. You can contact me at james.hanford.banjo@gmail.com.
